Quang Pham, Republican Candidate for California's 47th Congressional District, just announced that he has been enrolled in the National Republican Congressional Committee’s (NRCC) Young Guns program. That made him the second Vietnamese American Republican enrolled in the Young Guns program, after Assemblyman Van Tran who joined the program last year and so far has delivered credible fundraising performance and strong grassroots voters mobilization campaign. Both Pham and Tran are vying to be the Republican nominee to take on the long-time Democratic incumbent Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. Below is Quang's statement: “I am excited and honored that Republican leaders have recognized our campaign’s progress,” said Quang Pham. “The program will promote healthy competition and we look forward to honing our execution to defeat Loretta Sanchez next November.” Founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Congressmen Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns Program began as a Member driven organization of House Republicans dedicated to electing open seat and challenger candidates nationwide. > It has been both exciting and inspirational watching the grassroots conservative campaign of Andy Nguyen, former President and Chairman of the Vietnamese American Community of Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, for Tarrant County Commissioner against a 20-incumbent.
With his demonstrated leadership and service record and solid conservative platform, Andy, despite his political newcomer status, mounted an aggressive campaign for change. In a district where there were only 300 Vietnamese registered to vote in previous elections, his campaign registered, mobilized and secured approximately over 1,500 Vietnamese American votes during early voting period. A significant turn-out on General Election Day yesterday helped consolidate his lead over his incumbent opponent VanRavenswaay. |

Source URL: http://kosu.org/2010/01/gop-hopes-fresh-face-will-unseat-calif-incumbent/ Republicans are hoping to make gains in the 2010 elections, and they’re looking for new voices to carry their message to voters. One of their top prospects is California Assemblyman Van Tran. He’s the first Vietnamese-American to serve in a state legislature. Now, he has been recruited by the party to run for Congress in a Southern California district with the highest concentration of Vietnamese-Americans in the nation. Tran has represented the 68th Assembly District for nearly six years. Before that, he was a member of a local city council. And Tran’s personal story is very much like those of his constituents. His family left Vietnam on an American military transport plane a week before the fall of Saigon, when he was 10 years old. |

On the night of December 12, 2009, Republican Al Hoang, known in the Vietnamese community as Hoang Duy Hung, beat Democrat Mike Laster by six points 53% vs. 47% (501 votes) to become the first Vietnamese American serving on Houston's City Council.
Hoang, who is a defense lawyer and current President of the Vietnamese Community of Houston, will represent District F, which has a large multi-ethnic immigrants population and covers almost the entire Southwest Houston area. Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S. with 2.1 million residents, has approximately 100,000 Vietnamese Americans - a majority of whom reside in the Southwest area. Strong Vietnamese vote performance, esp. solid backing of Vietnamese senior voters, was key to Hoang's December 12, 2009 victory. Related Articles: |

An interesting analysis from Michael Barone, Senior Political Analyst of the Washington Examiner:
Prowling through the election returns in the governor races two weeks ago, I was surprised to find that Middlesex County, New Jersey, voted for Republican Chris Christie over Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine by a 48%-44% margin, almost exactly the same as Christie’s 49%-45% statewide margin. Middlesex County has been a Democratic county for as long as I have been studying election returns (going back to the 1960 election). In close elections it voted 58%-42% for John Kennedy in 1960, 46%-43% for Hubert Humphrey in 1968 (when he failed to carry New Jersey), 51%-47% for Jimmy Carter in 1976, 46%-38% and 56%-32% for Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996, 60%-36% for Al Gore in 2000, 56%-43% for John Kerry in 2004 and 60%-39% for Barack Obama in 2008. Historically it was a white working class county, with old industrial cities like Perth Amboy and New Brunswick; its county Democratic leader was often the major Democratic power broker in state politics. |
